Floating on Sunshine

Floating on Sunshine

Flowers or jellyfish? I’ve heard both, and I love that this painting seems to change depending on who is standing in front of it. I see flowers, but there is something about the way the forms float across the canvas that makes me understand how someone else could see an entire sea of jellyfish.

This piece was so much fun to create. I worked with thick layers of paint and lots of texture, building the shapes across the canvas and letting them overlap and move against the deep purple background. The yellows and golds bring warmth and brightness, while every little variation gives your eyes somewhere new to wander. There is a happiness in Floating on Sunshine that I never wanted to overcomplicate. Maybe that’s part of its magic. What you see within it is entirely yours.
