Tropical Vibrations

Tropical Vibrations

Living in Hawaiʻi, I am constantly surrounded by tropical plants that seem larger than life. Monstera leaves can grow so enormous that standing beneath one feels like stepping into another world. Their size, shape and presence have always fascinated me.

I wanted this piece to carry more than the image of a monstera. This piece has taken me longer to create than any other work I’ve completed. It was built slowly through many layers of intricate texture, with each layer adding more depth, movement and dimension to the canvas. I built the leaf with heavy texture and surrounded it with layers of intense color, allowing the pinks, purples, yellows, oranges and reds to radiate around and through it. The energy of the background gives the leaf its own rhythm, as though the entire piece is vibrating with life. Tropical Vibrations is my expression of the powerful, colorful energy of Hawaiʻi; bold, alive and impossible to ignore.
